A sharecropper who raised 14 children. When her kids had to work the farm instead of attending school, Queen didn't mourn what she couldn't change. She poured everything into ensuring the next generation would have opportunities she never did.

My father was one of those 14. He earned Cs because he was working a farm to survive — not because he wasn't brilliant. Growing up, I thought about that every single time I looked at my own report card. If he could do that under those conditions, I had no excuse for anything less than excellence.

Started as a maid with an 8th-grade education. Built a beauty salon, then a barber shop, then real estate investments. In 1963, my grandfather died in a trucking accident. Ruth — now a widow and single mother — kept building.

She became the bank for Black families in Emporia, Virginia when real banks wouldn't serve them. She paid for college for multiple family members. She helped me buy my first home. She survived cancer. She worked until she was 88 years old.
